seminar: summer school - "self commons construction" in Pavia, Italy
This semester, we are co-organizing a seminar in the form of a summer school in Pavia, northern Italy. It is an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme with an online component in April and May followed by an intensive on-site week between June and July.
The intensive summer school "seLf cOmmons ConstructIon" is an international workshop focused on commoning practices and experimental self-built architectural initiatives.
Four universities from Malaga, Thessaly, Pavia, and Berlin are collaborating with the professional carpentry team Camposaz to exchange ideas and co-design with the residents of the Santa Teresa district in eastern Pavia, as well as the local ARCI association and the municipality.
Camposaz is a non-profit association based in Italy that promotes and organizes 1:1 scale wood DIY workshops. It was founded informally in 2013 by two Trentino associations to promote interaction between different disciplines and professionals related to design. Since 2016, it has been formally established as a Cultural Association with numerous volunteer members.
The project site is located in the Santa Teresa district of eastern Pavia, near the monumental cemetery. The neighborhood developed in the early twentieth century around the SNIA Viscosa industrial plant, following the typical layout of workers' villages, with public housing complexes and common services. The plant, which occupies an area of 170,000 m², has been decommissioned since 1982 and was designated as one of the transformation areas in Pavia's urban planning document (PGT). Over the years, both the vegetable gardens and green areas have been maintained primarily by local associations and elderly residents. The two playing fields (football and tennis) are currently in a state of disrepair but are part of a restoration project by the Municipality.
The co-design phase involves drawings, play and performative actions, alongside community presentations for approval. During construction, participants will build structures using locally sourced materials. The workshop will conclude with an inauguration event.
Applications and selections for this seminar are already closed.
