seminar: the city in crisis: phases (faces) of a disaster
After the devastating earthquake in southern Turkey and Syria, more than ten cities were destroyed and became uninhabitable, leading to the loss of cultural and architectural heritage spanning hundreds of years. Countless individuals were killed and left homeless in a vulnerable situation. The current situation highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive action plan for disrupted cities, with consideration given to various relevant factors and the involvement of all concerned parties.
To address these issues, we are holding a seminar on SS23, using the earthquake-affected region as a starting point, with the aim of developing a concise action strategy specifically tailored to the city in crisis. Drawing upon lessons learned from past events and experiences in different contexts, the seminar will explore the challenges and solutions involved in rebuilding a city after a disaster* and how to avoid it first hand. The strategies will be seen as a collection of methods and theoretical approaches rather than design decisions. Each session will focus on another phase of the crisis, in a discussion form, together with invited guests.
Expected: regular and active participation in all workshop activities, writing short weekly reports, and composing a joint written manifesto at the end of the semester.
*in this case the recent Earthquake in Turkey and Syria will be the main focus but it could have been any disaster in the future awaiting for us: climate crisis, water scarcity, inner-city housing comes to mind....
