More than green: urban ecology and art

Prof. Nina Fischer, Florian Wüst

Soil life, circular economy, environmental protection - countering the destruction of human and natural resources in the industrial age has a long history. The early eco-movements thought ahead, tried things out, failed and are not just being rediscovered today. Moving from the local to the global level of restructuring extractivist economies is an increasingly urgent challenge in view of the climate catastrophe. Because without the social question, the ecological question cannot be solved. The Brazilian environmental activist Chico Mendes, who was murdered in 1988, put it in a nutshell: ecology without class struggle is gardening. The social structuring of a sustainable future particularly concerns the ever-expanding cities of this world. The seminar More than Green: Urban Ecology and Art discusses the history and present of the ecological question and establishes connections to artistic practices and initiatives that explore, shape and politicize the relationship between the city and nature in a variety of ways. Students develop their own texts and/or filmworks in this theoretical/practical seminar.

The second part of the seminar, which began in the winter semester 2024/25, primarily offers excursions, explorations and encounters outside the UdK Media House: Visits to exhibitions, city walks, site-specific workshops and presentations.
