In the “Design Fundamentals” module, students in semesters 1 and 2 learn about the terms and elements of visual communication across all media. They are introduced to the processes of design and learn to develop their own design methods.
In addition to basic knowledge, a theoretical examination of specialist literature enables students to reflect on their own design work. Topics from the fields of information, communication, perception, writing, image, media and film are covered.

Course Content and Structure

In the basics, students deal with elementary questions of design and develop the possibilities of typography and (moving) images, illustration and graphic elements, space and object, interaction and new media. All phases of the design process are taught–from research, concept development and sketching to the creation of variants and realization.
In the first semester, students work on different tasks in several short workshop formats. By trying out different media, techniques and conceptual approaches, they gain a basic understanding of design processes.
In the second semester, the focus is on in-depth project work. Two thematic focuses are worked on over a longer period of time. Teaching takes place in a variety of formats that differ depending on the question and design phase–including presentations, discussions, group and individual talks, lectures, papers and workshops.

Lecturers

The fundamentals of design are covered by two professorships with different focuses. They are complemented by the position of two artistic assistants, teaching assignments and tutorials. Responsible are: Prof. Franziska Morlok (Fundamentals and Processes of Design) and Prof. Kora Kimpel (Fundamentals of New Media).
