Yana is a typographer and illustrator. Born in Kyiv, she graduated from Berlin International University of Applied Sciences, lives and works in Berlin. Her book „Cyrillize it!“ was published by niggli earlier this year. She will provide us with a basic introduction to the Cyrillic dimensions of type and typography by going into further detail on the evolution of characters in different regions, and its cultural and political significance in design.

Petra is a font engineer at Monotype Berlin. She degreed at Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts typeface design master class. The world of blackletters and manuscripts is one of her big passions, which she keeps approaching and exploring both by calligraphic and digital means, including coding. Few people would ever be more capable of taking us on a captivating journey into this context than Petra, in order to prove that blackletter is not just alive and well, but fresh again!

Yimeng Wu 吴祎萌, born in Shanghai and a UdK alumna of the graphic design open studio (Klasse Hickmann), lives in Berlin and works in her own studio „Studio Wu 無“ as a typographer, graphicdesigner and illustrator. Her Chinese-Latin typeface „Bojing 柏京体“, published by Hanyi Type (Beijing) demonstrates the interconnectedness of styles far over the boundaries which scripts normally set. In her work, she constantly keeps on rethinking the relationship between type and image, picking up the multilingual and transcultural dimension seemingly by chance.

Artist and art director Golnar Katrahmani studied visual communication in Teheran and Berlin, she lives and works in Berlin. Her lecture series “Type & Politics” is dedicated to the social dimensions of the Perso-Arabic script. In countless workshops and talks she also brings up the running revolution in Iran in its visual side. This time, we will immerse ourselves in the systemic aspects of the script to understand in depth the way it “ticks”.
