This Midnight Hour by British composer Anna Clyne (*1980) is a one-movement work for large orchestra, inspired by two poems by Juan Ramón Jiménez and Charles Baudelaire. It refines the sound world of the Romantic symphonic poem and brings it into the thoughts and sounds of our time. In The Blue Cathedral, American composer Jennifer Higdon (*1962) creates a piece of cathartic musical mourning, in which the two solo instruments, flute and clarinet, engage in intimate and touching sound constellations with the orchestra. Anton Bruckner's great Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major, first performed in 1881, is not so much a Romantic contrast to these works as it provides a symphonic framework that complements the two younger works, which do not abandon their connection to tradition.
