Exhibition “SHOOT: About Performance”
Exhibition “SHOOT: About Performance”
From Friday, May 1st, our alumni fellow Tanja Ostojić will show videos of her very first performances at Die Neue Aktionsgalerie Berlin (DNA): Personal Space (1996/98) from Manifesta 2 (which will be screened for the first time in Germany) and probably the most famous one so far I´ll Be Your Angel from Venice Biennale 2001.
DNA Berlin presents “SHOOT: About Performance” featuring Kyungwoo Chun, Nezaket Ekici, Gary Hill, Elana Katz, Mwangi Hutter, Tanja Ostojic, Marcus Shahar, Mike Steiner.
“Art is performance — per-formance. It forms and fits together by going through.”
— George Quasha
SHOOT appears as a pure condensation of violence. But according to Chris Burden who was shot in the arm by a rifle, “the violence part was not that important”. The performer conducts a mental experience through his body that turns into a sculpture. An obsolete meaning of “shoot” is to crystallise. Between permanence and impermanence, the art of performance is always paradoxical. In organising an exhibition about performance, DNA revives its origins and presents the apparent contradictions through the medium of video, documentation material and live performances. What were the initiatives of this artistic expression and how has it evolved with the passing of time?
