Auction and Exhibition: "Hare's Blood+ for Reproductive Freedom"
Vienna-based artists Lucie Strecker and Klaus Spiess conjure the famous German conceptual artist Joseph Beuys when they cloned the archived blood of a hare contained within his multiple “Hare's Blood” (1974–77). The resulting work, “Hare's Blood +”, broaches the issue of ownership rights and ethics in the life sciences and the arts by reawakening Beuys's alter-ego, the mythical figure of the Hare’s Women, a chimera able to transpose categorizations of life and death, human and animal, art and market, or race and gender. During “Hare’s Blood + for Reproductive Freedom” Strecker will auction off a transgenic cloning of Beuys's multiple and donate all proceeds to the Center for Reproductive Rights.
