The German-American Fulbright program supports the promotion of mutual understanding between the two countries at the level of academic and cultural exchange.

Master's students and Bachelor's graduates from universities and art colleges with a German citizenship who would like to study for one to two semesters (max. 9 months) as a graduate student at a US university can apply for a Fulbright Scholarship. The scholarship supports the study stay in the USA with up to $ 31,000. The new programme for the 2027/28 academic year is expected to be available from April 2026.  You can find out more about the application requirements and the application procedure here (German only).

PhD students from all disciplines who wish to undertake a four- to six-month research project in the United States, starting on 1 August 2026, are invited to apply to Fulbright Germany by 5 November 2025 (2 p.m.).  Further information about the application process can be found here (German only).

For Fulbright applications to US universities, a TOEFL test is generally required. You should inquire about the respective minimum score in good time with the host university.
