Grants for more equal opportunities (STIBET I)
What are grants for more equal opportunities?
The grants are intended to support international students with special challenges in their studies, e.g. refugees, people with disabilities or chronic illnesses, people with special care situations for children or relatives in need of care.
Who can apply?
- International students enrolled at UdK Berlin (Bildungsausländer*innen)
Foreign students who also have German citizenship and exchange students are not eligible for STIBET funding.
Enrolment during the entire funding period is required (summer semester 2024 and winter semester 2024/25).
- with special challenges and life circumstances (at least one characteristic must be fulfilled)
- Refugee background
- Degree of disability of at least 50% or chronic illness
- Caring for underage children in their own household (especially single parents)
- Caring for 1st and 2nd degree relatives
Duration and amount of the grant
The grant is paid in 6 monthly instalments of € 300 each (€ 1,800 in total) (July to December 2024).
A total of 12 grants can be awarded.
Which documents are required?
Documents to be submitted (please as one PDF file, max. 3 MB):
- Fully completed and signed application form
- Current certificate of enrolment from UdK Berlin (the certificate for the winter semester 2024/25 must be submitted later)
- CV in tabular form
- Motivation for the application, incl. description of the special challenges in your studies (max. 1 page)
- Proof of income (bank statements from all accounts for the last three months)
- Suitable evidence (in German or English) of the special challenges and life circumstances, e.g.
- Proof of application for asylum or other proof of refugee background, copy of current residence status, for refugees from third countries: copy of the last residence permit or other official proof from the country from which you fled
- Proof of a degree of disability of at least 50% (severely disabled person's pass) or medical certificate of disability
- Medical certificate of chronic illness with a description of the associated restrictions
- Birth certificate(s) of children
- Proof of the person(s) in need of care: Registration certificate showing the address of the person in need of care; birth certificate showing the relationship

Only complete applications can be considered.
Notes on the grant allocation
- Grant holders are generally allowed to work while receiving the grant. The upper limit for grant instalments and additional earnings is € 1,472 for students.
- If you receive another scholarship, additional funding up to the amount of a full scholarship is permitted. Beyond this, the STIBET grant must be reduced accordingly.
- If you receive social benefits (Hartz IV, housing benefit, etc.), please discuss in advance with your respective contact person whether and to what extent the grant will be offset against your social benefits. It will not be offset against BAföG.
- Former grant holders of the STIBET Special Grants Ukraine can reapply, but the previous months of funding will be counted towards the maximum funding period of 12 months. Simultaneous funding with a Study Completion Grant is excluded.
- There is no entitlement to funding. Applicants will be informed of the selection result in writing. Individual reasons for funding or rejection will not be given.
The grants are awarded by the DAAD with funds from the Federal Foreign Office.
