With the beginning of the summer term 2020, US-American artist David Schutter will become Professor of Fine Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2006 Schutter has been Asscociate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago. In 2017 his paintings and drawings were part of Documenta 14, among them his works referring to the Schwabinger Kunstfund or Gurlitt Art Trove. The concepts as well as the material of Schutter's paintings reflect a deep and intense reflection on art history.

Schutter received various international awards, among them being the Bundeskanzler Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2005), the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome (2015/16) and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2018). In March 2020, David Schutter will receive the Art Prize Berlin 2020, category Fine Arts, of the Akademie der Künste. The prize is awarded annually on behalf of the Land Berlin.

“After fifteen years of teaching so many remarkable students in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago, alongside such an incredible faculty, I will remain thankful for that singular opportunity. I now look forward to becoming part of the exceptional program of the Institut für Kunst at the Universität der Künste, Berlin. It is a premier school, with a long history of great artists and teachers.”
