Overview

Bzz Bald oder Hummelmonologe

Theatre, Music

The ‘Hummelmonologe’ (bumblebee monologues) combine surreal images and profound cries to illuminate themes such as migration, loss of home and the struggle for space in a globalized society. With a mixture of lyrical language, techno rhythms and a touch of nostalgia, the play takes the audience into a world where past and present merge. Who owns nature? And how can we assert ourselves in a world caught between capitalist constraints and ecological crises?
At the event, excerpts from the play Bzz Bald oder Hummelmonologe will be presented with with experimental turntable music

A titanic work - The German diaries of international UdK students Screening

Installation

In the German courses at the UdK, international students from all faculties meet in a similarly challenging situation - having to learn German quickly in order not to lose their place at university. In the diary project, the students initially approach the sometimes dreaded German language hesitantly, but to their own surprise during this writing process they develop a new voice of their own. The collection of over 100 diaries opens up a dialogue far beyond the UdK German courses. The diary texts deal with artistic processes as well as the challenges of student life at the UdK. They bear witness to the courage of the students to express themselves in this alien German language.

Funky! Füsical! Fylosofical!: Free Improv Orchestra

Concert, Performance Since 2017, students of all departments of UdK eager to experiment as performers and to work towards forming one collective body meet at the Free Improv-Orchestra. It brings about an Academy of Arts utopian qualities by being a lab for transdisciplinary exchange of technique, knowledge and practice. What would UdK look like, if all institutes would as work as closely together as the members of a temporary orchestra? Upcoming is a documentation of the Free Improv Orchestra’s work, featuring an encounter with this year’s installment which peaks at a performance at the UdK’s jubilee. This documentation is the result of a participant observation at this year’s “Kollisionen”. BY: Maja von Kriegstein (Artistic associate Music Education), students of the Kollisionen seminar ‘Funky! Füsical! Fylosofical!: Free Improv Orchestra', Prof. Dr. Hanna Engelmeier (Guest Professor of Communication in Social and Economic Contexts)

Gefühlserbe (Emotional Heritage)

Exhibition

What do we see when we enter the same rooms 30 years later? How do our perceptions, interests and concerns change over generations? With our exhibition Gefühlserbe, we would like to explore these questions and explore the emotional and artistic experiences of several generations of students on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Berlin University of the Arts.

Hybrid Rituals

Performance

The performance invites the audience to experience the interplay of sound, light, and movement, driven by innovative technologies that respond to proximity and touch. A dynamic dialogue emerges between physical and digital spaces, based on the artistic methodologies and interfaces developed by InKüLe (Innovations for artistic teaching) Through audiovisual interactions, projection mapping, and motion tracking, the stage transforms into a hybrid space where materiality, images, and sounds merge. This scenario, positioned between performance and installation, offers an immersive experience that the audience can actively shape.

Hypercapnia

Dance

Hypercapnia is a body-voice-sound performance based on Angelica Roa's body-base-research project “We are part of nature”. The performance explores the experience of hypercapnia (increased CO2 levels in the body) to highlight the connection between the human experience of suffocation and that of the planet. Through controlled hypopressive contractions, performers create hypercapnia and explore its effects on movement and voice, embodying the climate crisis in a visceral gesture. The soundscape emerges from their labored breathing and distorted voices, evoking the possibilities of ecological collapse and extinction.

Kreislauffabrik – Let’s Go Full Circle!

Exhibition

In the Kreislauffabrik, participants learn at first hand how the circular economy and resource conservation in the sense of Cradle to Cradle work. From the extraction of raw materials to production and recycling, participants go through the entire life cycle of a product and discover innovative ways to protect the environment - without sacrificing anything, but by rethinking! Look forward to interactive experiments, sustainable materials and the chance to actively contribute to solutions for a climate-positive future.

longing to Be (Part I)

Performance

longing to Be (Part I) is the continuation of Part I of Suet Wa Tam’s graduation trilogy. As the notion of "home"—tied to a specific place—begins to dissolve, this trilogy explores how one can interweave the past and the present and find belonging in memory and dance. How can the experience of transcending time be shared through performance.

Influencing by the Buddhist concept of impermanence and Henry Bergson’s idea of memory as a continuous flow of images, this collaboration delves into the technicality of light, sound and body and explores the transformative use of media to amplify the sentimentality resonance of the body, immersing in a continuous flow of consciousness and memory.

More than human perspectives

Installation, Screening

The installation presents the video works ‘Metakosmia’ by Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani (2024) and ‘Rooting for you’ by Lilli Kuschel (2024). The installation is accompanied by a two-part publication with texts created in collaboration with artists and scientists from the Oxford / UdK Berlin Seedfunding for Creative Collaborations. The current texts deal with the artistic works of Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani and Lilli Kuschel, focussing on more-than-human perspectives, climate change and the resilience of plants, animals and humans.

Reminiscence

Installation

The network of objects, Reminiscence, refers to the concept of a cocoon shell, symbolizing humanity’s transitional stage and the cyclic nature of change. How can we synchronize with others? How can we interpret this pulsation as a timeclock?Reminiscence collects heartbeat data from every person nearby using a sensor suspended above the object, which illuminates it with a pulsing, vibrating light. This heartbeat rhythm invites us to contemplate on our interconnectedness, turning each present individual into a performer.

Sacrament of Penance II

Installation, Performance

Sacrament of Penance II is an interactive performance dedicated to students and teachers at UdK Berlin. Participants can call the Gatekeeper’s office to confess their sins via telephone. This phone call is answered by the Gatekeeper whose task is to listen to the confession and give useful advice. Instead of redundant verbal prayers, the artistic priests will assign conceptual and meaningful performance assignments as penances. There is no judgement, no shame, no guilt-tripping so please don’t fear! We look forward to having heart-to-heart conversations and building a new artistic friendship.

Schaukasten

Exhibition Schaukasten is a showcase project organized by artists and architects, which exhibits contemporary art in public spaces. At regular intervals, the showcase is relocated, and presents a new exhibition. Our primary focus is on public spaces, which not only allow us to offer free access to contemporary art for all those who walk past the showcase, but also create a platform for young artists to present their work. For "An Experimental Ecology. Art practice in the dialogue of disciplines at the UdK Berlin" Schaukasten presents the artists Seongwon Park and Lasse Müller. Something about wind

Installation

How is wind formed? The greater the pressure gradient, the stronger the driving force, and the higher the wind speed. Is the formation of air pressure inevitable? Do you have the intention, the ability to control the wind? The interactive installation Something about wind explores experiences in the education system, as well as the impacts caused by hierarchical structures and compliance, attempting to collectively develop more creative ways of thinking. It uses feedback and comments gathered anonymously from fellow students, as well as live input. Viewers are invited to discuss their thoughts and current feelings.

The Drop:ppp

Performance

The Drop:ppp is a conceptual group improvisation that explores the phenomenon of the tipping point in terms of content, sound and visuals. Following self-created scores, the group will engage in processes that represent the unstable equilibrium and the resulting chaotic changes in the affected systems. The scores will appear as a visual projection as well as movement in space and explore the following questions: What does tilting sound like? How can sound material detach itself from its cultural codes? When exactly does the drop dissolve? Do we have a musical hypothesis for the ‘after’? Both visual and musical models for climaxes are invented and non-linear progressions of climax, climax and catastrophe are designed as a group.

BY: Ulrike Brand and participants of the seminar ‘Los-Lösung (The Drop)’ in the Studium Generale: Ali Amam (fine arts), Yonas Hussein El-Tawil (vocals), Chieh-Yun Fan (percussion), Samuel Gottlebe (guitar), Lauren Hinder (composition/synthesiser), Regine Jankowski (violin), Mathilde Koeppel (composition/piano), Sophie Renger (recorder), Dolores Rubienzik (visual arts/voice), Euripides Samaras (cello), Haotian Wang (piano), Seonbhin Woo (violin), Hongqin Wu (guitar)

The Sound Vessels

Concert

The Sound Vessels are interactive musical objects designed to explore how everyday actions can become vehicles for musical expression. Pouring liquid is an apparently simple task. Yet, it is learnt through repeated practice and can be performed in many different ways - slowly, subtly, or virtuosically fast. This is in some ways similar to playing a musical instrument: it takes careful coordination between perception and movement to perform expressive, dynamic variations. During the concert performance, the Sound Vessels will be brought to life.
The Sound Vessels are an outcome of a project led by Dr. Federico Visi and Dr. Robert Laidlow and supported by the Oxford - UdK Berlin - Seedfunding programme and a collaboration with Prof. Alberto de Campo and Ensemble KNM.

Encounters between the arts - 15 years of UdK Collisions

Installation

This audiovisual installation provides insights into project examples from the vibrant 15-year history of UdK Collisions, one of the earliest transdisciplinary project initiatives that brings participants from all UdK-departments into exchange. Since 2009, the annual transdisciplinary project week has enabled students and teachers from all disciplines to come together, get to know each other and their different ways of working. Expectations collide with the unexpected. Expertises open up to the unknown and the experiment. The video installation is allowing visitors to enter and leave at any time.
