Aribert-Reimann (Stiftung der UdK Berlin)
The foundation was established in 2006 and transferred to the UdK Berlin Foundation in 2023. The purpose of the foundation is in particular the cultural promotion of contemporary piano song, in the form of scholarships for young composers who graduated from a German or international university no more than three years ago. The scholarship includes the composition of a song cycle for voice and piano. The first performances of these compositions are to be given by students of the class "Contemporary Song" at the Berlin University of the Arts. The scholarships can be awarded once a year also internationally (§1 Abs.2 of the statutes).
The scholarship is not publicly advertised, but the candidates are proposed at the request of the foundation board by proven experts (composition teachers of German and international conservatories) each winter semester.
The Board of Trustees examines the candidates' documents and scores. A meeting is held to decide on the awarding of the scholarship.
The technical skills of the candidates as well as the most flexible handling of the vocal part, the text and the piano in the available scores play a role in the evaluation. Particular importance is attached to an imaginative design of the relationship between voice and piano.
