Georges Barthel started his musical education at the age of 8 years. After graduating at the Conservatoire National de Région in Strasbourg with both the modern flute (class of Claire Gentilhomme) and the baroque flute (class of Jean-François Alizon), he decided to focus on historical performance practice and entered the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. There he studied the early flutes with Barthold Kuijken and his assistants Frank Theuns and Marc Hantai.

In 2002 he was finalist at the international competition Musica Antiqua Brügge, where he was
awarded the price of the audience.

Georges Barthel has since then been playing in major festivals both in Europe and overseas as member of leading early music ensembles such as Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, Les Talens Lyriques, Collegium 1704, Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart - Gaechinger Cantorey, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Orchester La Scintilla Zürich and Anima Eterna Brugge.
Georges Barthel is currently teaching the early flutes at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen and the Unversity of the Arts Berlin.
