Education & Application at the Julius Stern Institute
Education
The entrance examinations for the summer semester 2025 are scheduled for Friday, 24.01.2025, from 13:00 - 20:00 and Saturday, 25.01.2025, from 9:00 - 19:00.
The extensive musical education at the Julius Stern Institute takes place alongside attendance at a general school. Tuition fees are 90 euros for the summer semester and 120 euros for the winter semester.
Individual Lessons
The study programme consists of intensive, age-appropriate individual lessons, taught by professors and teachers from the Universität der Künste Berlin (University of the Arts Berlin). The teachers are known for their success and experience in teaching highly gifted children and young people. The 90-minute lessons usually take place once a week during the semester (summer semester: mid-April to mid-July, winter semester: mid-October to mid-February).

Music Theory and Ear Training
The additional secondary subject of music theory and ear training extends over a period of four semesters (not before the age of 14). The division into groups of four to six pre-college students is communicated in writing by the examination board.
Julius Stern Chamber Orchestra
String students (from around the age of 12) are also required to take part in the Julius Stern Chamber Orchestra (exceptions are possible). In addition to the instrumental lessons, participation offers young musicians the opportunity to gain high-level orchestral experience as preparation for their subsequent studies at the UdK Berlin or another music university, as well as for their future careers.
Application
Before you register your child for the entrance examination, it is possible to audition with a teacher from the Faculty of Music at the UdK Berlin to receive an assessment on the chances of studying at the Julius Stern Institute.
1. Application Deadlines
When applying, please take note of the following deadlines:
- If you wish to begin your studies at the Julius Stern Institute in the respective winter semester (October to February), the responsible Enrolment and Examination Office (Immatrikulations- und Prüfungsamt) of the UdK Berlin will accept the complete application documents online from March 15 to April 15 before the respective winter semester. The entrance examination for the winter semester usually takes place in June or July.
- If you wish to begin your studies in the summer semester (April to July), the application deadline is between October 15 and November 15 before the summer semester. The entrance examination usually take place in January or February.
2. Application Documents

- written consent of the parent or legal guardian
- medical certificate confirming that the applicant is in good health with regard to the intended training (for singers: specialist medical certificate confirming healthy vocal function and that there is no recognisable impairment of the upper respiratory tract)
- recent passport photo (optional)
The short curriculum vitae should primarily report on the applicant's instrumental or vocal development. Important is information about:
- previous training (at which institute or privately? Since when?)
- previous artistic successes (concert performances or participation in competitions)
- participation in music courses, orchestra camps, etc.
- experience with chamber music, involvement in orchestra and/or choral work
The request for a specific teacher can be made on the application form. This will be granted if possible, but is in no way binding for the Faculty of Music of the UdK Berlin.

5. Entrance Examination
Entrance examinations for the summer semester 2025:
Friday, 24. 01. 2025 and Saturday, 25. 1. 2025.
Every applicant must take an entrance examination. The aim of the entrance examination is to assess the instrumental or vocal abilities and general musical talent according to age and instrument or voice to determine the particular artistic talent of the applicants.
Content of the entrance examination for instrumental musicians:
- Performance of at least two works from different stylistic periods*
- Sight-reading of an easy piece
Content of the entrance examination for singers
- Memorised performance of a folk song a capella and two accompanied art songs from different eras, also memorised, one of which can be replaced by an aria*
- Sight-singing of an easy song
- Testing the resilience and range of the voice, in case there is still uncertainty about this
Further sections of the entrance exam for instrumentalists and singers:
- Examination of musical listening skills and knowledge of elementary music theory
*The works to be performed are chosen by the applicant and should be appropriate to the applicant's age and level of training.
Applicants will be informed of the result of the entrance examination in writing at the appropriate time.
The teaching staff at the Julius Stern Institute will be happy to advise parents or applicants even if they do not pass the entrance examination.
