Der mit insgesamt 5000 Euro dotierte Wettbewerb ist nach dem Pianisten Artur Schnabel benannt, der von 1925 bis 1931 an der Berliner Hochschule für Musik, der heutigen Universität der Künste Berlin, unterrichtete.
