Dear friends of SoundS,
It's our pleasure to inform you of two important upcoming events in the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts, UdK program of early 2025, as well as taking a fond look back at one of the highlights of the tail end of 2024. Firstly, we welcome Jay Afrisando for our next sic! lecture. For this session the composer and multimedia artist will present a lecture focusing on aural diversity, disability, accessibility, and decolonizing arts practices. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, January 22nd at 7pm on our premises at Lietzenburger Straße 45, 10789 Berlin, Room 315 in cooperation with UNI.K (Prof. Kirsten Reese). And as we approach February, it is time for another season opening at our student-run gallery space, SoundsAbout. From the 2nd of February the gallery will exhibit a weekly rotation of student projects to the public under the umbrella of this season's theme: "Mesh". And finally we share documentation from Portale 2024, our event at Berlin's Zeiss Groß Planetarium that showcased 12 collaborative works by students from SoundS UdK and the DSSA DCN program at École Estienne de Paris back in December.

Language: English Lietzenburger Straße 45, 10789 Berlin, Room 315 22 Jan 2025, 7 pm
Through this talk, Jay Afrisando invites the audience to rethink and unlearn what we call "music" and share some best practices to tackle ableism in music/arts practices.
Jay Afrisando is currently a DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Fellow 2024 and an Assistant Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Sic! Sound in Context is a lecture series with international guests on sound art, electronic composition and sound-related media art with talks, presentations and lecture-performances.

MESH - SoundsAbout Season Opening
Finally, we're very happy to be ushering in a new season at our student-run exhibition space SoundsAbout. From the 2nd of February until the 30th of March the gallery will host a weekly rotation of exhibitions, performances, discussions and concerts by Sound Studies and Sonic Arts Students. This Season's MESH celebrates disorganised connectivity, comprising the spaces beneath and between the net, showcasing the wide-ranging, friction-generating works with and around sound, within and beyond UdK Berlin. More information on the program can be found on the SoundsAbout website https://about.sounds.berlin/ more

A look back at Portale 2024
Further to this, we would like to share documentation of our recent event at Planetarium Berlin. Portale 2024 showcased 12 audio-visual artworks by students of SoundS UdK and the DSSA DCN program of Ecole Estienne de Paris, in full dome projection and 360 degree ambisonic sound. The Works will now be shown at the Festival Sous Dôme at the planetarium of the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Paris in March 2025. more
