Ways of Inhabiting

We are not always aware of how we inhabit our living spaces, yet we spend much of our lives doing exactly that. When we think about housing, we tend to focus on practical factors such as the size of our rooms and apartments, as well as its location — reflecting the well-known real estate mantra: “location, location, location.” In later stages of life, housing decisions take on greater symbolic meaning, often reflecting our social status more than anything else.

Housing shapes our most personal and intimate experience of space. The way we interact with our surroundings significantly impacts our physical bodies and moods. The lived spatial experience happens through manifold impulses that we receive through almost all our senses, including touch, smell, hearing and sight. We also continuously and actively co-create the space we inhabit, by projecting on it our emotions and feelings. The experience of space is profoundly linked to the human body and the boundary between body and its immediate surroundings is not as precise as we imagine.

This semester, we will explore how we perceive, use, and move through the spaces we inhabit, as well as how we choreograph our bodies within lived environments. We will also examine how bodies coexist within shared domestic spaces. Starting from our personal experiences, we will translate them into tangible expressions of spatial awareness. Our journey will culminate in designing a sensory-driven spatial intervention in a dilapidated housing block at Hafenplatz.
