At the Limits of Perception and Cognition
Seminar/Workshop, English, 2 SWS, 2 ECTS (3 ECTS for participation in exhibition)
Tuesday, 10-14 h s.t., 7 dates: 24.10., 14.11., 28.11., 12.12.2017, 9.1., 23.1., 6.2.2018,
Hardenbergstr. 33, room 110
The seminar focuses on art and theories at the limits of human perception and cognition. The purpose of the seminar is to develop and expand experimental artistic mindsets and practices through a collective conceptualisation of speculative philosophies and aesthetics.
The last ten years speculative philosophies have had a growing impact on the art scene. What happens when people are no longer the measure of things, but one of many equal elements? What happens when object oriented ontology challenges the nature-culture dichotomy?
The students are invited to develop on concepts of perception, materialism, the anthropocentric, perception of time, hyperobjects etc. For each class there will be presentations of theories and artworks by teachers and the students. To finish off the seminar the students are encouraged to participate in the final group exhibition at a gallery space in Berlin.
Central questions in the seminar are: What are the concepts of perception? How can we think non-human perception? How can we approach aesthetics speculatively? How can we think arts and aesthetics beyond human perception and cognition?
The readings include Steven Shaviro, Donna Haraway, Timothy Morton, Jane Bennett, Brian Massumi, Steve Goodman, etc. We will invite relevant guest lecturers. We want to finish off the course with an exhibition (1 ECTS extra).
Leistungsanforderung für den unbenoteten Studium-Generale-Schein: continuous and active participation in the course. Participation in exhibition is 1 additional ECTS.
