The present today is marked by a phenomenon of ubiquity. Not only of technological and media apparatuses, but of identities, objects and places; things do not seem to be confined anymore to one particular place, but rather exist at a multiplicity of digital and analog instances. Either a phenomenon of perceptual illusion, or concretely and effectively dystopic: everything, everywhere, everyone seems accessible or reachable at the flip of a second, all at once.

In such conundrum, a sense of place is evermore fluid and tight to a timely virtuality. How could we think, sense, and cohabit spaces that do not linger in the present time? What is it that happens within the empty/silent spaces, in the liminal in-between of media where meaning seems to occur?

In this practice-and-theory course on critical media, we will dive into the processes of TRANSLATING, DRIFTING, DISPLACING, and TRANSFORMING meaning between different media to compose a new understanding of space. We will critically analyze and discuss theoretical texts, artistic and design examples, and engage hands-on in prototyping projects and developing artistic strategies that engender a sense of place among the migrations of different media.

This course is open to all students of the university, but an affinity with technical and digital media is desired.

Leistungsanforderungen: 2 ECTS for listening / participation + 2 ECTS for development of project or academic essay.
