This thought-provoking block seminar invites you to dive into the complex and often overlooked history of colonialism. Through the medium of film we will uncover the hidden narratives and forgotten stories that have shaped our understanding of the world. Join us as we critically examine the impact of colonial amnesia and its lingering effects contemporary society. This course offers a unique opportunity to engage with powerful cinematic works and engage in meaningful discussions that challenge our preconceptions and broaden our perspectives. Students will get the chance to explore the untold stories and unveil forgotten chapters of our shared history.

Participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the history of colonialism and its impact on contemporary society. They develop critical thinking skills to analyze and interpret films a s a medium for exploring colonial amnesia. While engaging in meaningful discussions and debates about the complexities of colonial history and its ongoing effects they recognize and challenge the narratives and stereotypes perpetuated by colonialism in film.

The seminar will include theoretical and historical inputs, film screenings, case studies and presentations. We will watch and analyze relevant films that explore colonial amnesia. We will examin specific case studies in order to understand the complexities of colonial history. Participants may engage in independent research and analysis on selected topics and present their findings in the class.

Excursions are planned to: Original UfA Studios in Berlin-Neukölln, Babelsberg Studios Potsdam.

Requirements for the ungraded Studium Generale credit points: regularly and actively participating in class debates on controversial topics related to colonialism and film and keeping a reflective journal to document personal insights and reflections throughout the course or writing a short essay.

Benita Bailey ist Schauspielerin, Theater- & Filmemacherin & Lehrbeauftragte. Sie studierte Internationale Beziehungen und Afrika Studien an der Universität Leipzig und an der Hong Kong Baptist University & Schauspiel in Berlin. Für die UN arbeitete sie in New York und für die Deutsche Regierung in Peking und Berlin. Aktuell entwickelt sie ihren ersten Langspielfilm und mit dem Kanadischen Kollektiv Diaspora Kidz eine interdisziplinäre Performance basierend auf dem arrivals legacy project. Seit Juli 2020 produziert sie außerdem #yellit auf YT, in der sie Schwarze Künstler*innen vorstellt. Seit März ist sie in der Titelrolle “PFLEGIONÄRIN” in der ARD-Mediathek sehen. 2022 wurde sie vom Focus Magazin zu den 100 Frauen des Jahres gewählt u.a. auf Grund ihres Einsatzes gegen Alltagsrassismus. Benita ist Gründungsmitglied und im Vorstand des Schwarze Filmschaffende e.V. Sie lebt mit ihrer Familie in Berlin und Toronto.
