“Natural:mente” is the title of a book written by media philosopher Vilém Flusser, who was born in the Czech Republic and fled to Brazil during the Nazi regime. Flusser's own phenomenological view of the world, shaped by a life of displacement, is reflected in his essays. Especially in “Natural:mente”, he explores natural objects as cultural products, dedicating each chapter to a specific natural object, such as “The Cedar in the Park,” “The Moon,” and “Winds”, to develop a broader phenomenological perspective on nature. The seminar is based on Flusser's book “Natural:mente”, but focuses on developing your own perspective on nature/natural objects. Beyond the understanding of the text, participants will be encouraged to explore and express their own perspective on nature/natural objects through artistic practice using various media. Discussions may also extend into contemporary non-human discourse, and the seminar may include excursions to related exhibitions. Participations from diverse disciplines are all welcome.
Fulfilment criteria for ungraded accreditation:
1 ECTS: attendance + one presentation
2 ECTS: attendance + one presentation + one individual work, which could be either: (a) a paper of approximately 10 pages, or (b) an artistic work accompanied by a 5-page reflection on the concept and creative process, including images of the final piece.
