The workshop IRAN 101 is aiming to represent a glimpse of Iranian culture by looking into contemporary Iranian art and artistic production, raising questions about the social and cultural life of artists inside and outside of Iran and different generations through a series of lectures, panel discussions, film screenings and workshop. The workshop’s main objective is to familiarize and engage students with different cultural practices and their possible impact on art productions.

This event will examine recent developments in Iranian art both locally and internationally, bringing together a number of scholars, artists, curators and art directors to discuss topics and themes such as the concept of global versus national practices, artist’s affiliation to their birth country and whether or not nationality should play a key role in art works, Iranian art scene, its exposure, dissemination system both inside and outside Iran, alternative art platforms in Iran and also different perspectives on how the curatorial and selection process, mechanism, etc. might function in different contexts. This event will also include film screenings with a brief account of Iranian cinema and a silkscreen workshop focusing on Arabic/Persian writing. It will examine the influence of writing on one’s perception and its connection to politics.

The seminar will encourage group discussions and provide an opportunity to talk further about the key issues and concepts of the event.
