Questions of Architectural Theory: what's in the syllabus?

In this seminar we will discuss selected questions of architectural history from the 18th century to the present through a close reading of primary texts, supplemented with exemplary case studies. Moving not chronologically but thematically, the seminar will encompass topics including: foundational theories, type and character, machines and bodies, critiques of modernism, as well as more contemporary debates on environmentalism and technology. The seminar includes a workshop, which will address the need to revise the existing architectural canon. Treaties, Enlightenment tracts, and modernist manifestoes, were usually exclusively Western in their provenance and focus. Seeking to explore how architectural theory can become more global, the workshop will examine questions of domesticity, housing, work, and the public/private dichotomy, discussing (among others) positions from Saidiya Hartman, Dolores Hayden, and Katie Lloyd Thomas.

Nathalie Bredella studierte Architektur an der Technischen Universität Berlin und der Cooper Union New York. Sie war Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Architekturfakultät der Technischen Universität Berlin und wurde 2008 im Fach Architekturtheorie mit einer Arbeit zu Architektur und Film promoviert. 2010/2011 war sie Research Fellow am Internationalen Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) an der Bauhaus Universität Weimar, 2015/2016 Research Fellow an der DFG Kollegforschergruppe "Medienkulturen der Computersimulation" (MECS) der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg. Seit dem Sommersemester 2016 ist Nathalie Bredella Gastprofessorin für Architekturgeschichte mit dem Schwerpunkt Medien- und Gendertheorie. Zuvor war sie mit einer DFG geförderten eigenen Stelle zum Thema "Architektur und neue Medien" am Institut für Geschichte und Theorie der Gestaltung, Universität der Künste Berlin tätig. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur, Stadtforschung, Medialität der Architektur, Gender und Medien sowie digitale Kulturen.
