Non-Imperial Imaginations: Film & Possible Futures

During the seminar, we will explore how non-imperial imaginations can be produced through the medium of film and working with archives. Through our own artistic and filmic research, we will search for decolonial and Marxist sketches of possible futures.
Following Chakrabarty's text "Provincializing Europe", there are more and more attempts to destabilize hegemonic constructs and realities through a situated production of knowledge and thus to view "Europe" as one periphery among others instead of as an imagined center. Taking this up: To what extent can film make visible something that transcends the colonial polarity of "self" and "other"? Which histories of entanglements can we pursue? Which moments and presentiments of what is possible in the future become visible that are suppressed by past and present power and violence?
With these questions, we embark on a search for non-imperial imaginations. To this end, we will visit historical and contemporary archives (e.g. ethnological collections, Round Tables 1989/90, historical sites, monuments, personal archives) and use decolonial, feminist and Marxist perspectives to ask whose stories have been made invisible and which stories could be salvaged today for sketches of possible futures. In the sense of Appadurai (2013), it can be explored how film can be used to raise possible futures by looking at hopes and wishes. Another method of artistic or filmic research could be to look back at the supposed center. Such a work cannot be innocent and must have asymmetrical power relations and the reflection of one's own subject position in mind.
We are primarily dedicated to our own artistic research sketches and their discussion. As an introduction, we will get to know selected post- and decolonial texts as well as individual artistic positions that work with experimental, essayistic and documentary film - e.g. by Aya Koretzky, Laura Horelli, Sun Ra and from the DEFA section Futurium. The cinematic and artistic research can be worked on individually or in groups, starting from the different media backgrounds of the participants and finally brought together in a film sketch.

Wir wollen während des Seminars erkunden, wie nicht-imperiale Imaginationen durch das Medium Film und die Arbeit mit Archiven hervorgebracht werden können. Durch eigene künstlerische, bzw. filmische Recherchen begeben wir uns auf die Suche nach dekolonialen und marxistischen Entwürfen von möglichen Zukünften. In Anlehnung an Chakrabartys Text „Europa provinzialisieren“ gibt es vermehrt Unternehmungen hegemoniale Konstrukte und Realitäten durch eine situierte Wissensproduktion zu destabilisieren und so „Europa“ statt als imaginiertes Zentrum als eine Peripherie unter anderen zu betrachten. Daran anknüpfend: Inwiefern kann durch Film etwas davon sichtbar werden, was über die koloniale Polarität „Selbst“ und „Andere“ hinausragt? Welchen Verflechtungsgeschichten können wir nachgehen? Welche Momente und Ahnungen über ein zukünftiges Mögliches werden sichtbar, die durch vergangene und gegenwärtige Macht- und Gewaltverhältnisse unterdrückt werden?
Mit diesen Fragen begeben wir uns auf die Suche nach nicht-imperialen Imaginationen. Dafür werden wir historische und gegenwärtige Archive (z.B. Ethnologische Sammlungen, Runde Tische 1989/90, historische Orte, Monumente, persönliche Archive) aufsuchen und durch dekoloniale, feministische, bzw. marxistische Perspektiven danach befragen, wessen Geschichten unsichtbar gemacht wurden und welche Geschichten für Zukunftsentwürfe heute geborgen werden könnten. Im Sinne Appadurais (2013) kann erkundet werden, wie durch Film mögliche Zukünfte durch den Blick auf Hoffnungen und Wünsche erhoben werden können. Eine weitere Methode der künstlerischen, bzw. filmischen Recherchen könnte sein anstelle eines zentralisierten Blicks, an Blicken zurück auf das vermeintliche Zentrum zu forschen. Eine solche Arbeit kann nicht unschuldig sein und muss asymmetrische Machtverhältnisse sowie die Reflexion der eigenen Subjektposition im Blick haben.
Wir widmen uns vor allem eigenen künstlerischen Rechercheskizzen und ihrer Diskussion. Einführend lernen wir ausgewählte post- und dekoloniale Texte kennen sowie einzelne künstlerische Positionen, die mit experimentellen, essayistischen und dokumentarischen Film arbeiten - z. B. von Aya Koretzky, Laura Horelli, Sun Ra und von der DEFA Sektion Futurium. Die filmischen und künstlerischen Recherchen können einzeln oder in Gruppen ausgehend von den verschiedenen medialen Hintergründen der Teilnehmenden erarbeitet werden und schließlich in einer Filmskizze zusammengeführt werden.

Requirements for the ungraded Studium Generale credits: Regular, active participation and a sketch of an artistic or filmic research.

Anna Lauenstein, who grew up in Chemnitz and Leipzig, lives and works as an artist and filmmaker in Berlin. She studied Fine Arts with a focus on New Media at the University of the Arts (Berlin) with Prof. Jimmy Robert, Prof. Ming Wong and as „Meisterschülerin“ with Prof. Hito Steyerl. In her exchange semester she was at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens. She also studied Cultural Anthropology at the Humboldt University (Berlin) and the University of Leipzig. In her artistic research she combines artistic as well as cultural anthropological methods and works within the tensions between knowledge, poetics and politics, whereby a decolonial perspective on Europe is central. Her works have been shown e. g. at Kunstquartier Bethanien, the Museum of Photography, Berlin and the BWA Gallery, Wrocław. A DAAD research grant has been awarded to support a collaborative experimental feature length documentary film and she was nominated for the President's Fine Arts Award of UdK. Since August 2020 she is artistic and scientific assistant at Studium Generale.
